How to Disappear: Muscle Memory Collective Exhibition

How to Disappear: Muscle Memory Collective Exhibition

In this work we employ a unique technique where we synthesize the geologic process, and the byproducts of ceramic studio production are recycled into geologic strata by fusing together in the kiln. We create a ceramic shell, line it with a glass release, fill the shell with the recycled materials, and then fire it together in the kiln. Once the pieces come out of the kiln, we then reveal the form's cross-section by running the forms through a wet-saw. This process speaks to a disconnect between geologic time and a human timeline. By utilizing recycled ceramic byproducts, the work emphasizes the need to rethink material waste, and by pairing the ceramic strata forms with images this comparison becomes more pronounced.

The ceramic material, which was once molten in the kiln and had flexibility when it was clay, appears to be truncated and frozen in time when viewed through a human perspective. It is impossible to say how many times these ceramic materials have moved through the rock cycle, but by reflecting on this timeframe we can begin to look at our actions as having consequences far beyond a single human lifespan.
