As Thin as Butterfly Wings: Joint Exhibition of LEE Tsun-Jen and WANG Hung-Yu
The ceramicist couple, LEE Tsun-Jen and WANG Hung-Yu, have known each other for over fifty years. It is their interest as well as work to make ceramic art. Ceramics is part of their daily life, every day they spend together.
They started out making traditional ceramics in the early days and made changes along the way. For a period of time, they followed their own path and eventually entered the phase of neoclassicism by thinking outside of the box. It was not until 2000 that they began to try the inclusion of multi-media, and then added technological materials to give ceramic works different looks and functions. The exhibition feature on thin clay ceramics, as well as works that combine different media and designs.
The thin porcelain series is the result of an important research and development. The process shifted from color painting on the surface to the carving over thin clay, and then to the hollow inlay with gold. The beauty of the thin clay is like the thin and beautiful wings of a butterfly, hence the name “Butterfly Wings”. Through the light, the work shows an unbearable lightness which exercises various effects on our senses and vision.
